CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Taylor’s thoughts were all over the place. The call from Papa Niles bothered her. She hated disappointing him and Nana. In all honesty, she and Travis hadn’t thought about help from the outside. It never occurred to either of them to alert Nana or Pops that their grandson was missing.

Wait. Did Travis tell Papa Niles they saw Thomas at the wedding? Did he know Thomas had been in prison and was out on parole? She fought back a sigh as she used the card to enter her room.

Moses walked in behind her and closed the door. “You have a sofa and another chair?” He looked around the room before facing her again.

“Yes. Don’t you?” she asked glad he pulled her away from her depressing thoughts.

“No. My room’s much smaller.” He moved toward the sofa and sat down. “This is better than the bar. I can see you clearly and hear you too. Is everything alright?”

“Yes. Just family stuff back in the States,” she said, her tone dismissive.

He didn’t say anything for a few moments. “Tell me about Taylor Rollins. I should know something about the woman who saved my life.”

“You were fighting to live when we showed up.” She sat near him and brought her knee onto the cushion showing a lot of thigh as she turned to face him.

“I, we, all of us would’ve died if your team hadn’t shown up. Thank you for that.”

“You already thanked me,” she said looking down at the sofa. She didn’t want his gratitude. What do you want? She wasn’t sure, she admitted to herself a few moments later. Moses intrigued her. He was good-looking in a raw, tall, dark and handsome way. His face and body still marked with bruises from his imprisonment spoke of his strength of character and strong will. Ashad’s treatment of Moses would’ve shattered a lesser man. She had seen that kind of brutality inflicted on prisoners of war over and over through the years.

“I have,” he said softly.

She looked up, meeting his penetrating gaze. When he continued staring, she asked. “What?”

“Nothing, just appreciating the view. You’re an interesting puzzle.”

“Why do you say that?” she challenged.

“When we first met, and I asked about the traitor, you were polite, but I got the feeling you didn’t see me. Not as a person, definitely not as a man.”

Travis told her she did that to guys all the time. “I didn’t mean… honestly, all I could think about was finding my dad. It wasn’t personal, and I hope you don’t take it that way.” She shook her head to clear it. “Did you see me? As a woman when you asked about the traitor that day in the restaurant?”

He took a deep breath and released it slowly. “Yes, always. But I pushed past the attraction and buried it so I could focus on the mission. When we returned stateside, I asked everyone who was the woman. They said I hallucinated, there weren’t any women, one guy brought a nurse to my bed saying she was the person I kept hearing in my head.
